The Bojana Delta: A Mosaic of Plant Habitats and Rare Species

The Bojana Delta is the only area in Montenegro where you can experience dozens of different habitat types within just an hour’s walk — each home to a wide range of Mediterranean plant and animal species, many of which are rare, vulnerable, or endangered.

In just sixty minutes, one can traverse sandy sea beds and Posidonia seagrass meadows, estuaries, lagoons, coastal dunes, permanent and temporary Mediterranean pools, grasslands, maquis shrubland, and Mediterranean pine and oak forests.

Thanks to this exceptional diversity, it’s possible to encounter more than 20 species of reptiles and amphibians in a single outing. This makes the Bojana Delta an ideal space for education, research, and collaborative project development with local communities.

This year, we only scratched the surface — conducting a preliminary survey of the plant habitats and amphibian and reptile fauna of the Bojana Delta, along with documenting the pressures and threats observed during our fieldwork.

The research was carried out as part of the project “Creating Conditions for Bottom-Up Conservation and Sustainable Development Planning in the Bojana River Basin”, led by EnvPro with financial support from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF).
