Contributing to the Future Protection and Management of Priority Conservation Areas in the CZM Basin around Nikšić

2022 – 2023 Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF)

This project focuses on enhancing the protection of the Zeta River Basin area.

As part of the project:

  • Researching fish species: We are actively collecting data on fish species in the region, with particular attention to cave-dwelling species. In addition, we are exploring potential habitats of the olm (Proteus anguinus).

  • Training new researchers: Our team is training three young researchers in fish fauna studies and nature conservation practices.
  • Collaborating with institutions: We are working closely with local and national institutions to promote nature conservation efforts in the Nikšić area.
  • Proposing protection measures: We provide specific protection recommendations for certain fish species and their habitats.
  • Developing our organisation: We are creating a strategic plan to strengthen our organisation’s operations and impact, enabling us to achieve better conservation results in the long term.

Why this matters?

  • Zeta River Basin is home to rich biodiversity that we aim to preserve for future generations — not only for humans, but for the well-being and survival of the many plant and animal species that inhabit this region. We work hand in hand with local communities and institutions to achieve lasting change and improve conservation practices.

We are grateful to the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) for their support and for making the implementation of this project possible.
