Zeta Through the Lens

2025 European Union and Ministry of Public Administration

Montenegrin Ecologists Society is implementing the project Zeta Through the Lens this year, with the goal of preserving and promoting the Zeta River. Thanks to this project, actively engaged citizens can report problems and participate in monitoring the state of the river. That’s why we invite you to contact us and join our efforts to more quickly and easily protect and promote our green Zeta.

A digital platform for reporting “hotspots” will allow citizens to anonymously or under their name report pollution, poaching, illegal construction, and other violations. Local authorities will have access to this data in order to respond more quickly and enforce legal measures.

Zeta River was declared a nature park in 2019, but it faces numerous challenges, including pollution, poaching, and unsustainable urbanisation. A monitoring system for managing this river has not yet been established, and the limited involvement of the local community further complicates its preservation.

Our project idea places citizens at the center of Zeta’s protection, empowering them to report environmental violations and actively participate in preserving natural resources.

As part of the project, two key initiatives will be launched: – One to establish regular water quality monitoring, and – Another to form an “Advisory Forum for the Preservation of the Zeta River.”

The project’s expert team will carry out detailed field research, including water sampling at key pollution points. The results will be presented in a comprehensive report that provides an overview of the current state of the Zeta River, including water quality analysis, identification of ecological violations, and concrete recommendations for improving river protection. At the end of the project, a photo exhibition will be organised, showcasing both the beauty and the threats facing the Zeta River.

Results of this project aim to bring about long-term change – creating an informed and engaged community that actively participates in environmental protection, and responsible institutions that enforce the law more effectively.

The project “Zeta Through the Lens” is supported within the Supported=Empowered program, implemented by the Fund for Active Citizenship (fAKT) in partnership with the “Slagalica” Foundation for Local Community Development from Croatia. The program is funded by the European Union and co-financed by the Ministry of Public Administration.
