2025 – 2027 Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF)
Buljarica is one of the last remaining coastal wetlands along the Adriatic and one of the most valuable biodiversity areas in Montenegro. Through this project, we aim to strengthen its conservation and protection by combining scientific research with active community engagement. The initiative brings together existing field studies and an ecosystem services assessment to create a broader understanding of Buljarica’s importance, not only for birds, plants, and other wildlife, but also for people who benefit from the ecosystem services it provides.
A key focus of the project is the establishment of the first Advisory Board for Buljarica, bringing together representatives of the local community, institutions, the scientific community, and civil society organisations. Through dialogue, joint data analysis, and the development of recommendations, the project seeks to support evidence-based decision-making and initiate concrete steps toward the formal protection of the area. In cooperation with the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF), we will also bring valuable regional experience from successful wetland restoration and conservation projects to Buljarica.
The project also aims to engage young people and the wider public, through an international youth science camp in nature, the production of an educational animated video, and an awareness campaign designed to bring the values of Buljarica closer to a broad audience.
Our goal is for Buljarica to become an example of nature conservation through cooperation, knowledge, and shared responsibility, while ensuring long-term public support for its protection.
