Research on Subterranean Biodiversity and Identification of New Taxonomic Units in the Nikšić Field, Montenegro

2024-2025 Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF)

Project focuses on the exploration of speleological sites in the Nikšić Field to enhance the protection of underground habitats.

As part of the project:

  • We are exploring the biological diversity of subterranean spaces: We collect data and samples from speleological sites across the Nikšić Field;

  • Our team has a new member, who will also become the first biospeleologist in Montenegro: In collaboration with the University of Ljubljana (SubBioLab), a MES ecologist will be trained to study cave biodiversity in Montenegro;

  • We are promoting the value of the Nikšić Field: Shedding light on the importance of protecting subterranean fauna and their habitats.

Why is this important?

Nikšić Field is the largest karst field in Montenegro. The ecological significance of this area has been recognised in both national and local strategic plans, as well as at the international level. It stands out as one of the most water-rich areas in the country.

At the same time, subterranean systems play a crucial role in regulating and maintaining the water regime, while harbouring highly specialised and often narrowly endemic species whose lives still remain largely a mystery.

If you wish to submit a complaint regarding any of the project’s activities, please follow the procedures outlined in the Grievance Mechanism.
