The Morača River, together with its tributaries, represents one of the last large free-flowing river systems in the Balkans, with a total length of approximately 500 kilometres. As part of the Blue Heart of Europe, the Morača holds exceptional natural value and biodiversity, comparable to the Vjosa River, which has been designated Europe’s first Wild River National Park.
The project “Protection of the Morača” aims to ensure long-term, science-based, and inclusive protection of the Morača River basin. Through a comprehensive approach, the project will develop a conservation model that preserves the river’s natural processes, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, while simultaneously supporting sustainable local development.
Key project activities include:
-
A feasibility study for the protection of the Morača River basin
-
Analysis of ecosystem services provided by the river to local communities
-
A rehabilitation concept for degraded sections of the lower Morača course
-
Establishment of a steering committee with representatives of institutions, NGOs, and experts
-
Awareness-raising campaigns and activities with local communities
-
Capacity building for small-scale, environmentally friendly development initiatives
The project builds on experiences from the protection of the Vjosa River and contributes to the development of international standards for the conservation of free-flowing rivers, in cooperation with IUCN.
The project is implemented in partnership with the Center of protection and research of birds, with support from the EuroNatur Foundation.
The project lays the foundations for the permanent protection of the Morača River and strengthens Montenegro’s role in safeguarding the rivers of the Balkans.
