Results of the 2024 Scientific Research Camps Komarnica and Blagaj

We are pleased to present the results of the regional scientific research camps for biology students, which we conducted in cooperation with partners in the Komarnica and Buna (BiH) areas during the summer of 2024!

More than 60 biology students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia participated in the five-day research camps, where, together with mentors, they developed their knowledge and skills in field research as well as in the process of analyzing collected data, while networking with experts from various biodiversity fields, and with fellow students from neighboring countries.

Eight mentors guided the students through the world of eight different biodiversity categories, such as mosses and higher plants, insects, bats, other small and large mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, caves and pits, and more. Participants spent most of their days (or nights) in the field, getting acquainted with the rich living world of these regions, while the rest of the time was spent analyzing collected data and networking.

We are thrilled by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the young biologists, although at the same time, we are concerned about the low turnout and interest of students from Montenegro. However, this issue also presents us with an opportunity to act and improve opportunities for our students by organizing similar activities in the future.

The project results were presented at biology faculties in all three countries, as well as at thematic press conferences, and remain permanently available in the form of a Publikacije.

These activities are part of the project “Youth of the Western Balkans for Nature Protection,” implemented by CDE in cooperation with partners: the Citizens’ Association “Fojničani” from Maglaj, Youth Club “Novi Val” from Blagaj, the Scientific Research Society of Biology Students “Josif Pančić” from Novi Sad, and the Association of Biology Students in BiH. This regional project is conducted within the ReLOaD2 program (Regional Programme on Local Democracy in the Western Balkans 2), funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
