Balkan River Summit 2024

2024 EuroNatur and Riverwatch

Over a Decade of Protecting the Blue Heart of Europe

The Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign has been tirelessly working for more than ten years to protect the free-flowing rivers from Slovenia to Greece. During this time, the campaign has grown into a powerful movement where scientists, activists, and nature lovers from across the Balkan Peninsula have achieved significant successes in stopping dam construction and preserving river ecosystems. A key part of these efforts are the in-person gatherings — River Summits — which serve as platforms for networking, celebrating achievements, sharing experiences, and jointly planning future actions.

Since 2015, the campaign has co-organized four River Summits, bringing together regional and European stakeholders. In 2024, the focus returns to the Western Balkans with the Balkan River Summit 2024, scheduled to take place from September 29 to October 3 in Podgorica, Montenegro. The event will gather up to 150 participants, including enthusiasts, experts, activists, and decision-makers from across the Balkans.

Summit goals

The summit aims to strengthen collaboration and networking among river protection advocates, enhance capacities for preserving river ecosystems, and promote sustainable development strategies. A special focus will be placed on exchanging knowledge and expertise across science, law, economics, and energy sectors, in order to support organisations and individuals with limited resources. Through dialogue and cooperation, the summit aspires to develop effective strategies that will ensure the long-term protection of rivers and their vital role in preserving nature for future generations.

Why Montenegro?

This year’s host, Montenegro, is renowned for its pristine rivers, deep canyons, and breathtaking landscapes. However, this natural paradise faces numerous threats, including hydropower development, pollution, uncontrolled gravel extraction, and a lack of institutional support for river conservation. Hosting the summit in Montenegro presents a unique opportunity to draw attention to these issues, support local initiatives, and strengthen national efforts for river protection.

Special attention will be given to the Komarnica River and the Save Komarnica initiative, which has become a symbol of the fight for river ecosystem protection in Montenegro.

Organisation and Support

The host organization, Montenegrin Ecologists Society, is responsible for logistics, program coordination, communications, and financial management of the summit. With the support of a dedicated grant, the Balkan River Summit 2024 continues the efforts of the Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign to connect and empower everyone committed to the protection of rivers — not only in the Balkans, but across Europe.

The summit offers a space for exchanging ideas, gaining new knowledge, and building long-term partnerships. By bringing together diverse voices and experiences, the goal is to ensure the health and vitality of our rivers — priceless ecosystems that support the lives and development of entire communities.
