{"id":4657,"date":"2026-02-20T03:02:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T02:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drustvoekologa.me\/projects\/research-on-subterranean-biodiversity-and-identification-of-new-taxonomic-units-in-the-niksic-field-montenegro\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T13:14:05","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T12:14:05","slug":"research-on-subterranean-biodiversity-and-identification-of-new-taxonomic-units-in-the-niksic-field-montenegro","status":"publish","type":"projects","link":"https:\/\/drustvoekologa.me\/en\/projects\/research-on-subterranean-biodiversity-and-identification-of-new-taxonomic-units-in-the-niksic-field-montenegro\/","title":{"rendered":"Research on Subterranean Biodiversity and Identification of New Taxonomic Units in the Nik\u0161i\u0107 Field, Montenegro"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>2024-2025\nCritical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Project focuses on the exploration of speleological sites in the Nik\u0161i\u0107 Field to enhance the protection of underground habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><p class=\"\" data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"473\"><strong data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"394\">We are exploring the biological diversity of subterranean spaces<\/strong>: We collect data and samples from speleological sites across the Nik\u0161i\u0107 Field;<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"\" data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"709\"><strong data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"505\">Our team has a new member<\/strong>, who will also become the <strong data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"571\">first biospeleologist in Montenegro<\/strong>: In collaboration with the University of Ljubljana (SubBioLab), a MES ecologist will be trained to study cave biodiversity in Montenegro;<\/p><\/li><li><p class=\"\" data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"849\"><strong data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"762\">We are promoting the value of the Nik\u0161i\u0107 Field<\/strong>: Shedding light on the importance of protecting subterranean fauna and their habitats.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is this important?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nik\u0161i\u0107 Field is the largest karst field in Montenegro. The ecological significance of this area has been recognised in both national and local strategic plans, as well as at the international level. It stands out as one of the most water-rich areas in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, subterranean systems play a crucial role in regulating and maintaining the water regime, while harbouring highly specialised and often narrowly endemic species whose lives still remain largely a mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default
