I\u2019m returning from Prokletije, entering Podgorica filled with smoke. This time it\u2019s not tires burning at \u0106emovsko polje, but Gorica. And while I accept this incident as everyday normal, Marija calls me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSomething got into my living room. It\u2019s really ugly, has big eyes, it\u2019s transparent, and it has fingers like an alien. Look, it\u2019s on the wall. What should I do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA transparent lizard?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes, like a lizard. Is it poisonous?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo, it\u2019s a gecko, it lives in cracks in the walls and is active at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat?! It lives in my apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes, it\u2019s there, sometimes on the balcony, sometimes in the living room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can\u2019t believe it. Can it get into my room?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGeez, so I sleep with a gecko?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s totally harmless. It feeds on insects that are on your terrace and sometimes in the corners of your apartment. It\u2019s really shy and doesn\u2019t like to be inside. So it will leave soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCan it climb on my head while I\u2019m sleeping?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo, unless you have lice in your hair?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the last thing I need. Seriously, can it climb on my nose while I sleep?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYeah, and even get inside your nose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019re joking now. What should I do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve been living with a gecko for years but only learned about it tonight. Now you live with knowledge, and knowledge is power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hunt for the gecko, the transparent monster in the living room, begins. A broom and a dustpan. But it\u2019s faster than the broom and hides behind the cabinet. We move the cabinet. Now we have to be as slow as possible so it doesn\u2019t notice we\u2019re close enough. Quick move \u2014 it\u2019s under the broom, then in the dustpan, then into a jar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCarry it, I can\u2019t look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m carrying it to the balcony.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo way, please take it out of the apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut its home is on the balcony. It will help by catching bugs inside your apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so the nocturnal gecko left the building but with a chance to return to the same balcony if it doesn\u2019t find a better home. It will quickly find some crack at least in the sidewalk because it\u2019s only about ten centimeters long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It will keep hunting cockroaches and moths near the building at night and will again be attracted by the light of someone\u2019s apartment, where it will find a crack on the balcony that imitates the rock crevices it used to live in before the buildings existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
